Conservatory Varieté

The traditional Wintergarten Varieté Berlin, long known for spectacular productions and big names in show business history, is now also making an impressive architectural statement: extraordinary linear LED lighting bathes the striking façade of the 19th-century building in atmospheric light in the evening hours – warm, inviting and a real eye-catcher.

Lighting solution from Barthelme LED Solutions, specialising in customised linear LED lighting solutions for architecture, design and industry.

Light as a dramatic element

The lighting design focused on the goal of clearly highlighting and carefully developing the visual identity of the building – always with great respect for the historic structure. The lighting sensitively complements the classic facade structure while adding a new, theatrical dimension. This creates an exciting interplay of light and shadow that allows passers-by to experience the special atmosphere of the variety theatre.

Careful planning and creative implementation

On behalf of the owners of the Wintergarten Varieté, the project was realised in close cooperation with managing director and artistic director Georg Strecker and artistic director Rodrigue Funke. The architectural firm Maske + Suhren was responsible for the design concept as well as the lighting and implementation planning. The project was carried out in collaboration with the installers from Freilicht! and is characterised by its precise and cooperative implementation.

Mineral colour design with impact

Selected KEIM products were used for the facade design, which respectfully emphasise the historic building fabric while offering a durable, high-quality surface. These include KEM Soldalit, KEIM Design-Lasur and KEIM Restauro-Lasur for targeted colour and surface accentuation, as well as KEIM NHL lime plasters (coarse and fine), which provide texture, depth and an authentic feel. The combination of mineral paints and plasters not only guarantees a harmonious appearance, but also the breathability and sustainability of the historic facade. The durability of the paints allows the building to be permanently showcased, which makes the light architecture particularly effective.

Historic architecture effectively showcased

A key criterion in the lighting design was the choice of a particularly warm colour temperature. At 1900 Kelvin, the light used is deliberately based on the classic filament bulbs in the entrance area of the variety theatre. This colour reference creates a harmonious overall picture and enhances the emotional impact of the facade lighting. The lighting design thus impressively combines warmth, elegance and subtle theatricality.
