The technical school on Sokolská Street was founded in 1885. It was the first Czech technical school in Moravia and Silesia. The building that stands there today is already the third school building and the second to have been built specifically for the school.
The initial design was drawn up by the architects Vilém Berger and Karel Welzl (both of whom were teaching at the school at the time) in collaboration with the headmaster, Vojtěch Dvořák. The new building was completed remarkably quickly: construction began on 1 May 1900 and was finished in July 1901 – that is, after just 14 months.
The school building has two storeys and is divided into three wings. The main facade is very long (143 metres) and stretches across the entire frontage of what is now Sokolská Street. Thanks to KEIM Soldalit, KEIM Contact-Plus and KEIM Silangrund, the façade retains its natural colour and remains protected in the long term.
The central entrance is particularly striking: it is accentuated by two Ionic half-columns and framed by two tower-like sections. Sculptures stand in the niches of these towers. Above the entrance there are also inscriptions and reliefs commemorating important figures from the worlds of science, technology and architecture.
Inside, a large staircase in the entrance area is particularly impressive. From there, two vaulted corridors lead onwards. Further details include mosaic floors and subtle stucco decorations featuring technical motifs.
In addition to the main building, the site also features a separate single-storey workshop building. It was extended between 2004 and 2006; the extension houses a foundry and an art studio.
