AMSTEL STATION AMSTERDAM

The Dutch painter Peter Alma was best known for his impressive murals in Amsterdam’s Amstel railway station in 1939. As a pioneer of “De Stijl”, an abstract art movement, he devoted himself primarily to murals in transport buildings. His winning design ‘The global significance of the railway system and its technical progress’ impressed the Amstel Station jury with its composition, colour palette and simplicity. The execution was challenging, as the surfaces were 20 metres wide and 9 metres high.
