EINSTEINTURM

The Einstein Tower was planned on the initiative of Erwin Finlay Freundlich to prove Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. Erich Mendelsohn, an innovative architect, designed the observatory with an experimental approach, integrated the telescope into the architecture and made creative use of reinforced concrete. Despite pioneering ideas, this led to planning and structural problems that made it difficult to maintain. After almost 100 years and a refurbishment in 1997-1999, extensive damage required a new restoration, financed and carried out by the Wüstenrot Foundation.
